How does Fren generate a course?
You type a topic. Fren drafts a chapter outline in a few seconds, you edit it however you want, and then it generates a script for each chapter and converts those scripts into audio. Outlines come from Google Gemini; audio is rendered by Cartesia’s Sonic voice engine.
How long does a course take to generate?
The outline appears within a few seconds. After you tap “Generate,” most courses finish their full audio render in 2–5 minutes depending on length. You can leave the app — we’ll send a push notification when it’s ready, and you can also start listening to the first chapter as soon as it’s done.
Is Fren free?
Yes. Fren v1 is fully free — no subscription, no paywall. To keep the AI bill sustainable, we cap generation at 5 new courses per day and 50 per account lifetime. Once a course exists in your library, you can listen as many times as you like.
Can I edit the outline before it generates audio?
That’s the whole point. After Fren drafts the outline, you can rename chapters, reorder them, delete the ones you already know, and add new chapters in plain English. Audio only renders once you tap Generate.
Why did a chapter get something wrong?
Course scripts are written by a large language model. LLMs occasionally simplify, miss nuance, or hallucinate specifics. Fren is great for orientation and overviews on a new topic — it is not a textbook and shouldn’t be relied on for legal, medical, financial, or other consequential decisions. If you spot a clear error, send us the chapter and we’ll look at it.
Can I listen offline?
Open a course and tap the download icon on the course detail screen. The audio for every chapter is cached on your device and stays there until you remove the course.
Can I share a course with a friend?
Yes. Tap the share icon on the course detail screen to generate a public link. Anyone with the link can play the course — they don’t need a Fren account. You can revoke the link any time from the same screen.
How do I change the voice or playback speed?
Tap the speed control in the player to cycle through 1×, 1.2×, 1.5×, and 2×. Voice selection is coming in a future release.
How do I delete my account?
Open the App, go to Settings > Account > Delete account. This permanently removes your library, your playback state, and your authentication record. Public share links you’ve created are revoked. See our Privacy Policy for the full picture.
A generation is stuck. What now?
If a course has been “generating” for more than 15 minutes, pull-to-refresh on the Library screen. Stuck generations don’t count against your daily limit — if it still won’t complete, delete the draft and try again, or email us the topic so we can look at the logs.
