Privacy policy
Last updated: May 19, 2026
Fren (“we,” “us,” or “our”) makes the Fren mobile application (“the App”), a tool for generating and listening to audio-first courses on topics you choose. This Privacy Policy explains what we collect, what we do with it, and the choices you have. If you have any questions, email us at hello@tryfren.com.
Information we collect
Account information
When you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive a stable identifier and (if you allow it) your name and email address from the provider. Authentication is handled through our backend provider, Supabase. We do not see or store your Apple or Google password.
Course content
The topics you type, the chapter outlines you generate and edit, and the audio files produced for your courses are stored on our servers and linked to your account so you can listen on any device you’re signed in on. Course topics and chapter scripts are also passed to our content provider (Gemini) and our text-to-speech provider (Cartesia) to generate the outline, script, and audio.
Playback state
We store which chapter you’re on, how far through it, and which courses you’ve completed, so the app remembers where you left off.
Device & usage information
We collect basic device information (model, OS version, app version, IDFV), crash reports, and product-analytics events (e.g. “course generated,” “chapter started”) to keep the app stable and improve it. We do not collect IDFA or run third-party advertising trackers.
Notifications
If you grant push notification permission, we store your APNs token so we can tell you when a course you’re generating is ready to listen to.
How we use your information
- To generate course outlines, scripts, and audio
- To stream your courses to your devices and remember playback position
- To enforce fair-use rate limits (currently 5 courses per day, 50 per account lifetime)
- To send you a notification when a course finishes generating
- To diagnose crashes and improve the product
- To respond to support requests
Third-party services
We use the following services to operate the App. Each processes data in accordance with its own privacy policy.
- Supabase — authentication, database, audio storage, realtime delivery
- Google (Gemini) — generates the chapter outline and chapter scripts from your topic
- Cartesia — converts chapter scripts into audio narration
- PostHog — product analytics, crash reporting, and feature flags
- Apple Sign-In — authentication
- Google Sign-In — authentication
We do not sell your data, and we do not share content you generate with other Fren users unless you explicitly share a course via a public link.
Shared courses
If you choose to share a course via a public link, the topic, outline, and audio for that course become accessible to anyone with the link. You can revoke the link at any time from the course’s detail screen.
Data retention
- Account data is kept while your account is active.
- Courses you generate are kept in your library until you delete them.
- Generated audio files are de-duplicated across users when the underlying script is identical, so the same script may be served from a shared storage object.
- Analytics events are retained for up to 12 months in aggregate form.
Your rights & data deletion
You can delete your account at any time from Settings > Account > Delete account in the App. Deletion:
- Removes your authentication record, your library, your playback state, and any course audio uniquely owned by your account
- Revokes any public share links you created
- Can take up to 30 days to fully propagate through our backups
If you’d like an export of your data, email hello@tryfren.com from the address linked to your account and we’ll send it within 30 days.
Children’s privacy
Fren is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we’ll promptly delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes are posted on this page with an updated “Last updated” date. If a change materially affects how we use your data, we’ll notify you in-app.
